Round Top Winter Antiques Show
Saturday, January 14  &  Sunday, January 15, 2012

One of the most popular Winter Antiques Show in America returns to Round Top.

If the winter cold has you searching for a warm and friendly place to have fun, shop,
and learn more about antiques, then the Big Red Barn is the place to go
Saturday, January 14th and Sunday, January 15th.
With more than 120 antique dealers filling the Big Red Barn in the small country village
of Round Top for the Winter Antiques Show, all visitors will enjoy the atmosphere as well
as the protection from the weather indoors while shopping.

Antiques Round Top

Visionary Susan Franks began this show seven years ago, realizing the regional market and community surrounding Round Top would benefit from the weekend of shopping for the finest antiques and the visitor will not be disappointed. Some of this year’s out of state collectors and exhibitors include:
• Sandra Sheffield with Cabin on the Hill, who deals in American and will feature an 1830’s Ohio original red paint and hardware stepback cupboard in addition to several other Maine collectibles.
• Susan Skinner and Hector Vasquez, who have unique and interesting industrial pieces.
• Fred Cain from Florida, with exceptional European and American furniture, paintings, and smalls.

Some of the Texas collectors and exhibitors include:
• Glenwood Vernon with his wonderful early Texas and American furniture.
• Anisworth Art and Antiques, who are bringing interesting early Texas painting and early garden with cottage pieces.
• Johnson Barrett Antiques, who will be featuring a New Braunfels 1830’s Walnut pie safe, turned leg and pegged cherry dining table from North Carolina and Swedish country kitchen original paint dated from the 1830’s.

“Newcomers to antiques are always welcome”, states Susan Franks, owner of the Big Red Barn.
“Our antique dealers take pride in explaining and educating their products to those that are just not sure of the antique world.
The history revolving around these pieces is sometimes quite fascinating.”

The show runs Saturday January 14 from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday January 15 from 10am to 4pm
at The Big Red Barn on 475 South State Highway (5 miles north of Round Top).
Food service will be available on site.
There is free parking with a nominal admission of $5.00.

The Sealy Area Historical Society will hold the annual old-fashioned style Spring Picnic on March 31, 2012 on the grounds of the Santa Fe Museum located at Silliman and East Main in Sealy, Texas.
Admission is free.

The Spring Picnic has the feel of a picnic at the turn of the 20th Century.
Games and tournaments will include: croquet, badminton, washer pitching, hoop and stick races, tricycle races,
checkers & dominoes. A vintage baseball tournament including three teams will be held in Joe Scranton Park
across the street from the Santa Fe Museum Park.

A puppet show of Circus Acts will also be presented.

Picnic

Demonstrations of Quilting and Spinning and other activities common in late 1800s life will be held.

A parade of antique cars, trucks, tractors and horse drawn wagons will travel from the Liedertafel to the Santa Fe Museum.
The parade will begin at noon.

Following the parade, "Bonnie & Clyde" will have a shootout while riding in antique cars.

An exhibit of antique toy trucks and dolls will be on display in the Santa Fe Museum. Food and drink available will be items popular in the early 1900s. Historical information about all the activities and foods will be presented on the signs located near each activity or booth.

In conjunction with the picnic, the “Airing of the Quilts,” will take place throughout Sealy, with area residents exhibiting quilts on porches and in yards. A quilt exhibit featuring primarily antique quilts will be on display at the Liedertafel.

On Friday evening, March 30, from 6 PM until 9 PM a Quilt Show Reception
will be held at the Liedertafel. Dr. Kitty Ledbetter will present at a reception held on Friday at 6:00 PM at the Liedertafel.
Her presentation is titled “A Victorian Needlework and British Quilting Tour.”

resources, significance, and practices.

Appetizers and refreshments will be served.
Quilts will not be handled during the Reception.

During the Quilt Show on Saturday, white cotton gloves will be available to examine quilts.
Dr. Ledbetter will also appraise quilts during the Quilt Show on March 31, 2012.

Attwater's Prairie Chicken Festival
Saturday & Sunday, April 14 & 15
(Second Weekend of the Month)
Sponsor: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
Tours, lectures, activities for all ages
Special Tours Sat. every hour from 7am to 4pm; Sun. 7am to 4pm

Tours Offered to Celebrate Attwater’s Prairie Chicken Festival

T On April 14 &15, the public is invited to the 18th annual Attwater’s Prairie Chicken (APC) Festival for a chance to see the critically endangered birds during the booming season – a time the males gather to perform their elaborate courtship ritual.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) staff and volunteers will be conducting guided tours to the “booming” grounds, which provide the best chance to see the typically elusive birds. The first tour leaves promptly at 7:00 am with additional vans leaving as they fill up. Tours will continue until the birds begin to leave the area, which is usually within an hour or two. Though seeing the birds is not guaranteed, this is the best chance the public has to witness this amazing spectacle found only here on the Texas Gulf Coast prairie.

Additionally, refuge van tours will be offered at 10:30 am, 12:00 pm, and 1:30 pm on both Saturday & Sunday.

Download the Tour Flyer

Participants will tour areas that are normally closed to the public and will hear first-hand how the FWS and its partners are working to recover the APC, including refuge management efforts and coastal prairie ecosystem issues. The tours are about two hours in length.

Attendees of the APC Festival can also enjoy a walking tour (for bird watching) from 8:45 am to 10:30 am both days.
Following the walk, hop on a van and explore the refuge’s woodlot area from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm each day.
These guided tours will be led by experienced birders and are appropriate for all birdwatchers, experienced or beginner.
For the native plant and wildflower enthusiasts, a special afternoon walking tour from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm will bring visitors up close and personal with many of the native prairie grasses and flowering plants. This walk, lead by a knowledgeable botanist, will give those involved a greater appreciation of the coastal prairie ecosystem.

All the walking and driving tours will begin at the refuge’s visitor center.
All events are free of charge.
Those interested in learning more about the festival should contact the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge at (979) 234-3021, ext. 221 or 223.

The APC is an endangered grouse that is unique to Texas gulf coastal areas. Over a century ago, there were around one million APCs living on six million acres of the Texas and Louisiana gulf coastal prairie. Today, less than one percent of their original habitat remains and their numbers are extremely low. The festival brings much needed attention to a bird that, though critically endangered, continues to remain on the landscape thanks to strong partnerships and sound science.

San Jacinto Day Festival and Battle Reenactment
April 21, 2012

Watch History Come Alive at the San Jacinto Day Festival and Battle Reenactment.

Relive the most important eighteen minutes in Texas history at the San Jacinto Day Festival and Battle Reenactment on April 21.
In 1836, General Sam Houston and the Texian army defeated General Santa Anna’s Mexican army to win Texan independence from Mexico and Texans continue to celebrate this victory 176 years later on the San Jacinto battlegrounds in La Porte, TX.

This year’s festival and reenactment is shaping up to be a noteworthy event for historians and families.
The San Jacinto Museum of History Association is hosting the event and promises history demonstrations, a children’s area, family entertainment, vendors sporting Texas wares and the largest battle reenactment in the state of Texas.

For more information about the event, volunteering or vendor information go to www.sanjacintomuseum.org.
