Tours Offered to Celebrate Attwater’s Prairie Chicken Festival

Prairie Chicken

In April, the public is invited to the Attwater’s Prairie Chicken (APC) Festival for a chance to see the critically endangered birds during the booming season – a time the males gather to perform their elaborate courtship ritual.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) staff and volunteers will be conducting guided tours to the “booming” grounds, which provide the best chance to see the typically elusive birds.

Participants will tour areas that are normally closed to the public and will hear first-hand how the FWS and its partners are working to recover the APC, including refuge management efforts and coastal prairie ecosystem issues. The tours are about two hours in length.

All the walking and driving tours will begin at the refuge’s visitor center.
Those interested in learning more about the festival should contact the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge at (979) 234-3021, ext. 221 or 223.

The APC is an endangered grouse that is unique to Texas gulf coastal areas. Over a century ago, there were around one million APCs living on six million acres of the Texas and Louisiana gulf coastal prairie. Today, less than one percent of their original habitat remains and their numbers are extremely low. The festival brings much needed attention to a bird that, though critically endangered, continues to remain on the landscape thanks to strong partnerships and sound science.

Anniversary of Texas Independence

182YEARS of TEXAS INDEPENDENCE
Archeology Awareness month in October

O C T O B E R

We invite you to come and participate in our October Archeology program! Come and immerse yourself in Texas history!

Introduce the entire family to Archeology and the history of San Felipe de Austin! Archeology Tour of San Felipe de Austin SHS/Colonial, Texas.

Free admission , donations accepted.

On January 1, 1840, Joseph Urban wrote a reimbursement request to the Republic of Texas Government. He listed his dwelling with a cellar, the bake house and kitchen and “The Courthouse” in which the Consultation and General Council met.

October
Archeological Investigations/Hands-on Archeology

Throughout the month of October, come to San Felipe de Austin state historic site and learn more about how the use of archeology will help shape future site development plans. Hands-on activities related to archeology throughout the day on Saturdays & Sundays, 9 am – 4 pm.

All Day/Ongoing:

Archeology themed activities including:
Dig box exercises for children
Screening and artifact sorting activities
Artifact reconstruction hands-on
Walking tours of the historic site, noting the layout of prominent buildings associated with famous early Texans

Special Presentations:

Discovering the Archeology of San Felipe de Austin
Finding the Farmer’s – This presentation will provide information about the recent archeological investigation that looked for the remains of the Farmer’s Hotel. This building was a target for excavation because both Texian and Mexican historical accounts noted the structure as having a brick cellar. This unusual architectural feature serves as a unique identifier for this building. Come and learn more about what was uncovered!

Job and Jackson – China Merchants
While the burning of San Felipe de Austin destroyed most of the artifacts left in the town when it was abandoned, some artifacts can provide unique insights into fascinating stories. Come and share in the story behind a sherd, part of a maker’s mark, and what our curiosity led us to learn!

We hope to see many out in attendance, thanks for your help!

TEXAS CULTURAL
HERITAGE CELEBRATION

November.... 2018

Date to be annouced

“The Dream that Became Texas”

Two days of true Texas history from a Birthday Celebration for “Father of Texas” Stephen Fuller Austin to the Sesquicentennial (150 years) Anniversary of the Chisholm Trail.

Learn about Austin’s fascinating story of bringing the Old 300 to Mexican held territory to what would culminate in 1836 as the independence of the great Republic of Texas, the second greatest story ever told around the world.

The Chisholm Trail with chuck wagon meals and cutting horse demonstrations will have a colorful cast including “Camp Cookie”, “Sundown” the Trail Boss, World Champion Trick Roper “Rowdy”, the head Wrangler who is a stuntman and actor, and of course World Champion Trick Gun Twirling & Bull Whip Artist “Pistol Packin’ Paula”.

Come out for two fun-filled days of events & entertainment. Whether dancing or just listening to a group, you will surely be impressed with the musical talent.

If you have ever wanted to be a cowboy, this may be your wish come true!

Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade
Saturday, December 1, 2018
(First Saturday of the Month)
Sponsor: Sealy Community Foundation

The lights – just look at the lights!
The Fantasy Park looks like a fairyland lighted by beams of millions of tiny stars with one giant star hovering over it all. The angels are heralding the birth of the Christ Child. Look – are those the three Wise men coming afar? So many others are here also. There's Santa, Frosty the Snowman, the Sugarplum Fairy, a toy train, Christmas trees, toy soldiers, and the nativity scene. Then, out of the darkness at the end of main Street, march hundreds of children singing, bands playing, and floats covered with lights, slowly making their way down to Fantasy Park.

6 pm with all day activities preceding the lighting of the park.
